All of these tables, charts, and calendars claim to predict daily feeding activity of fish with accordance to moon and solar influences. Nearly every fishing publication today publishes some kind of monthly solunar table, moon chart, activity calendar, action graph, or other similar version. ![]() ![]() It's not hard to find a solunar table of some kind. Yet as much as pro anglers endorse the effectiveness of moon charts and outdoor publications of every niche' continue to print them, rarely does either source validate these solunar claims with data. Twice he happily shoveled snow from his boat on the last trip.THE REAL SCOOP ON MOON PHASES By Joe Bucher Full Moon or Dark Moon? Major and minor solunar periods? Which is best? Does any of this moon mumbo jumbo make any real sense nor does it actually work? These are legitimate questions asked by thousands of anglers each year, and they deserve concrete answers backed up by some bonafide data. Gelb plans one more muskie trip this year to Vilas County, assuming he isn`t frozen out. Yet because of the demands of his job, he still is basically a weekend fisherman.'' There just is no one on the water today who knows as much as him. ''Tom is continually in the top five of the Muskies, Inc., master angler contests. ''He catches big fish by trolling, back- trolling, on open water, shallow water, casting, jigging, night fishing, drifting, using suckers-whatever it takes. ''Whereas most top anglers are specialists in one or two methods, Gelb is expert in every phase,'' Bucher said. When Bucher began fishing with Gelb a few years ago, he literally arm-twisted Gelb into becoming a field editor for Musky Hunter magazine. ''Tom found one rock wall where we took almost one fish on every trolling pass, and these were fish of 37 to 52 inches,'' Bucher said. By contrast, last year`s pattern involved rock walls. This time Gelb found his fish on boulders adjacent to deep water, sometimes boulder areas that were deceptively small. He goes after them with a battle plan, and he usually wins his encounters.'' ''To an amateur, all that water looks the same, but Tom has an uncanny knowledge of where the big fish will be lurking and what the presentations should be,'' Bucher said. And even if some did, most wouldn`t know what to do. Gelb confesses to be ''fairly secretive,'' inwardly shuddering at the idea that masses of anglers may stumble across his favorite spots in the vastness of Lake of the Woods.īucher says that`s highly unlikely. Then he goes out before dawn and stays out until after dark, which very few people do in October.'' He figures out where the muskies will be in big, big water. He factors in weather changes, barometrics, any relevant data. ''He creates an elaborate game plan based upon many factors, including moon phase.
